Epic Athlete | Bethany Thompson

Being an epic athlete to me means that even though I am with a group of amazing athletes that are extremely talented, everybody starts somewhere. Nobody starts off being the best at what they do, you have to work for it. To be the best you have to push yourself, you have to set goals, you have to crush those goals. This pushes you to be better and to change the game.

Personally, I had to spend countless hours in the gym just doing the basics. I’d take my mistakes and just do them over and over again until they were no longer mistakes. I knew I wanted to be great, and in order to become that way I’d have to train like I already was the best. I continuously tell myself that if I keep pushing myself that there may be people better than me but nobody can outwork me, nobody can tell me that I didn’t try hard enough, or that I didn’t give my all to achieve greatness. My work ethic and determination are things that I can always have control over.

No matter what, there will always be other things you can’t have control over. Injuries and set backs are at the top of the list. I have had a lot of them, for example I’ve broken my nose 8 times, cracked 2 ribs, sprained my ankles 6 times, and tore almost all the ligaments in my right ankle. This just goes to show that no matter the difficulties, no matter the set backs, you can push through anything you put your mind to. You can be the best as long as you know in your mind and heart that you can actually accomplish it.

Cheerleading is my passion; I fell in love with it. It wasn’t a mistake. It was what I believe I was meant to do. There is no other sport where I can be competing against my best friend who lives hours away from me, and come win or lose; she or he will still be my best friend. As a super super senior who will only be able to cheer International Divisions next year, never take the years you have in cheerleading for granted. It is my last chance. This is my last shot to be my best with Senior Elite and to create goals and try my very best to crush them. I’m sure next year I will be cheering in college, loving it, but I will continue to cling onto the moments of Allstar cheer that I will remember forever.

Know there is always an epic way to push yourself. No matter the level of whatever sport you play, there will always be mountains to climb and obstacles to push through. I use this knowledge everyday because I know that when you’re around greatness, and you wanna be great as well, you have to practice hard and never give up to be the best you can be. Don’t forget to live life full out; take life and live it up, and always be sure to appreciate every opportunity. We need to make the most of everything, because you never know if that opportunity will change your life. I know that becoming a 2017 Epic Athlete changed mine, now what will change yours?
